I didn’t make these tools, I just collected them.

Welcome to the Swiss Army Mama blog!

My goal for this blog is to collect various tips and hacks or strategies I’ve incorporated into my parenting and homeschool life. I’m a mama to five kids, more than half of them on the autism spectrum. In our house, we deal with ASD, BPD, ADD, ADHD and scattered others. Because of this, my parenting and teaching have had to adapt and keep doing so, to make sure our home is a happy and safe place where education isn’t misery.

That’s the goal, anyway. I mess up, too. But I’ve found or been given so many tools by so many wonderful parents and educators that I now use daily and I can remember how frustrated I was before being offered those skills. They’ve become my Swiss Army knife; not every problem needs the same tool, but I can’t emotionally or physically lug around an entire toolbox all day. I have to be ready to go in a second sometimes! Being prepared makes those overwhelming moments just a little easier.

So, whether you’re homeschool parent, a lettered disordered parent, a “neurotypical” parent, a babysitter, a relative, whatever— join me and find some useful tools to add to your own pocket? Feel free to share your own with me!

  1. I don't know if u do this, but my hubby suggested it. For Liam's autism, we keep in our car a sensory kit: Play-Doh, fidget toys, rice plushie, squishy, etc. I also wrote on an index card and keep in there ways to calm down if we have a meltdown. I haven't had to use it much lately but it was essential when we first got his diagnosis and he was younger.
