defuse with pressure

Your sensory-seeking kid is headed for a meltdown. You've noticed early enough that you might be able to stop it, if you can distract them. What do you do? Make their brain and body engage.

Don't force a kid to play, but offer: do you want to press your hands against mine? They can sit in your lap or sit across from you. Have them press their palms against your palms and push as hard as they can for a few seconds. Let them relax and repeat. Try again with their heels against your palms, where they push with their legs.

The resistance and pressure can release a lot of pent-up physical energy and disperse it, and distract them with something engaging enough that it defuses their rising stress. If a kid is already melting down, it's likely too late to try this, but see if you can notice when gets are getting antsy or whiny and help them change direction right then.
